City of Oxford Green Badge
English, French, Spanish
As a Green Badge Oxford guide since 2005, I still hugely enjoy introducing Oxford to its many guests.
A graduate of both Oxford’s universities (with degrees in Modern Languages and in History) , I give general introductory tours of the City and University as well as specialist tours.
My particular interests are in Literature, Architecture, History of Medicine and Science, the Civil War, Oxford’s Women and Oxford’s Jewish Heritage, as well as the city’s extraordinary Gargoyles and Grotesques.
I also tailor tours to the specific interests of my guests, so just let me know if you have a particular interest.
I always aim not just to inform but to inspire, entertain and most importantly, have fun.
Oxford has played a significant role in the History of Science and Medicine in this country. This tour examines the origins of medicine in Oxford , the 17th Century club which later became the Royal Society, the Penicillin scientists and more recent discoveries. It discusses Einstein's visit and the development of the different science departments of the University of Oxford.
Oxford's Jewish Heritage goes back to Medieval Times. It has one of the best documented Jewish Quarters in the world. This tour also tells the story of the refugee scholars of the 1930s.
Oxford was the Royalist HQ in the Civil War with the King based at Christ Church and his army all around the town. This tour gives a flavour of life in Oxford at the time and also explores the important Civil War characters associated with Oxford.
|Art/Paintings & Sculpture
Oxford boasts a wonderful array of stone sculptures, Gargoyles and Grotesques, mainly in limestone on the outsides of the buildings. This tour shows you what you might otherwise miss and introduces you to some of their secrets.
