I am 'Wessex Man'. I come from a Devon family, I grew up in the 60s and 70s in Southampton and near Bath, then three years at Oxford University. Now I live in Devon, and roam the ancient Saxon kingdom of Wessex - plus Cornwall - delighting in helping visitors seeking a unique and authentic view of this wonderful area. This broadly equates to an area from 'Oxford to Land's End' and 'Portsmouth to Bristol'.
In 2015, after eight years as Director of an international organisation in Copenhagen, I moved back to England, resolved to show off my home region, just as I had enjoyed discovering Denmark in my time there. That is how I came to train, qualify and now work as a Blue Badge Guide since 2016.
South Western and Southern England are full of interesting and beautiful places; some very visible while others are harder to find. Its importance in North European history, and in shaping modern English identity makes it fascinating to explore. The region has also played its part in the history of other parts of the world, especially the northern Americas. The area includes four National Parks, five UNESCO World Heritage sites, many Universities - including Oxford - nine anglican Cathedrals, and a wealth of beauty and interest in between. Let's go!
