Introduction:
Visiting Liverpool? I would be delighted to show you round. City centre and Waterfront tours are my speciality. An historian by trade, with a teaching background, guiding experience in mainland UK, France, Belgium and Poland, I am a Battlefield guide and a freelance Holocaust educator.I have an interest in all things historical, cultural and sporting. I am available for coach and walking tours, site visits, personal tours and talks focused on the Liverpool City Region. I can conduct pub tours , art gallery and museum visits. Waterfront walks and visits to specific sites of interest such as Speke Hall, Port Sunlight, the Sefton and Wirral coastline, the two Cathedrals, Beatle sites, football venues such as Anfield and Goodison Park can be incorporated into a tour. Fancy a Beatles tour?
Personal Interests:
I am interested in Georgian and Victorian aspects of Liverpool, historic country houses, links with the Titanic, the American and Irish connections, the legacy of the Slave Trade, the sporting traditions of Everton Liverpool football clubs. |
Special Interests:
Other | |
History & Prehistory | I am interested in the unravelling archaeology of the Sefton and Wirral coastal regions, the history of Liverpool and Chester from Roman times until present day lies within the buildings and culture of these two cities, Liverpool's Georgian and Victorian heritage is a specialist area of mine. These features can be toured on foot or by coach. Topics can be adapted for all age groups and interest levels. |
Maritime Britain | The maritime history of the UK finds Liverpool at its heart. Waterfront, museum and dock tours unlock this rich heritage. It is easy to incorporate coach, ferry and walking tours that give a flavour of this from the Old Dock of 1715 up to the secret HQ of the Battle of the Atlantic in WWII right up to the regeneration of the docks of Liverpool 2. There are so many stories to tell! |
Architecture | A tour of the stunning buildings of what was the second city of the British Empire would include the Giles Gilbert Scot Anglican Cathedral the iconic Liver Buildings of Walter Aubrey Thomas, Jessie Hartley's Albert Dock, the classical St Georges Hall and many more. Why not make it a photographic safari of breath taking architecture? |
Churches & Cathedrals | Not all cities offer a cathedral. Liverpool provides the world with two. From the modernist Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King perched over the Lutyens Crypt we can compare the grandeur of the gothic great space of Gilbert Scot's Anglican Cathedral with its highest and heaviest peel of bells in the world. Or perhaps a quiet walk to the Scandinavian Church in the Baltic Quarter? |
Art/Paintings & Sculpture | I can offer you a tour of the Lady Lever Gallery in Port Sunlight or the Walker in the St Georges Quarter, or perhaps a stroll along Crosby Beach to stand amongst Antony Gormley's iron men in Another Place. Maybe Liverpool' s own Valhalla, St John's Gardens could provide a walk through the city's parade of public sculpture. |
Medicine | By coach or on foot a tour of the regions links with medicine provide a glimpse into a world where the teeming city of the 18th and 19th century offered some of the gravest public health problems of the times. Visit the house where Dr Duncan addressed the challenges of cholera and typhoid, or where Thurston Holland experimented with X rays. The hospital sites tell their own stories. |
Education | As a former teacher let me arrange your tour. I can plan for any age range from primary up to post graduate level. If you have a topic in mind, permit me to help you make it an entertaining and enriching experience. My experience with young people allows me to pitch things at the right level. |
Conferences & Incentives | Liverpool is fast becoming the conference venue of choice. I can provide everything from personal tours to meeting and greeting on arrival. A tour linked to your conference subject can set the right mood and stimulate ideas. For those rare periods of relaxation a city panoramic tour by coach or a customised pub tour with even a whiskey tasting arranged nearby could make the conference special. |
