Introduction:

I was born and bred in Scotland and have a background in journalism. I have a passion for showing visitors round my country, whether it is exploring our varied and attractive cities or further afield in the beautiful Highlands. I offer private driver guided extended tours on the mainland and islands. I also provide day excursions and half-day or full-day city walking tours.

In my spare time I am Site Director of an archaeological field survey on the island of Tiree, on the West Coast of Scotland, where we are recording prehistoric, Viking and later settlement evidence. My special interests are Celtic and Viking archaeology and the history of the peoples of the Scottish archipelago.

I am a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries Scotland and a member of both the Association of Certificated Field Archaeologists and Glasgow Archaeological Society. I am also a Scottish Tourist Guide Association Blue Badge Guide.

My qualifications include an Honours degree in Scottish History and Literature and a further degree in Archaeology and Celtic Civilisation, both awarded by the University of Glasgow. I also have a postgraduate qualification in Museum Studies from Leicester University.

Most importantly, I am easily bribed with coffee and chocolate.

"You made history come alive for us Stewarts and gave so much meaning to Rus's bucket list pilgrimage. Thank you." Stewart family, USA. April, 2019

"Thank you very much for yesterday. You are truly a scholar of Scottish history and a very interesting person to be with - we tested you and your patience for at least 12 hours !" Barry and Deb Fell, Pittsburgh USA. March, 2019

Archaeology

As a member of a field archaeology society which travels all over Scotland surveying deserted settlements I have a unique insight into the complex social history of the Scottish Highlands.

I have been known to wander over the border and once worked in a Roman museum in England (Cirencester) and excavated a couple of seasons in Wales (Castell Henllys).

History & Prehistory

History is my first love which is just as well because Scotland has rather a lot of it!

I have a good grounding in European and Scottish pre-history but my original specialism was the 'Outlaw King' himself Robert the Bruce.

Castles & Palaces

Castles, palaces and country houses can easily be visited for the day when staying in Edinburgh or Glasgow. These include

Edinburgh Castle
Stirling Castle
Blair Castle
Holyrood Palace
Linlithgow Palace
Scone Palace

Midhope ('Lallybroch' Outlander)
Doune ('Castle Leoch' Outlander)
Blackness ('Fort William' Outlander)

Churches & Cathedrals

Interesting medieval abbeys are found in the Scottish Borders south of Edinburgh:
Jedburgh
Dryburgh
Melrose

We might also visit
St Giles Cathedral
Holyrood Abbey
Paisley Abbey

Literature

I have a degree in Scottish History and Literature and it is fascinating to explore Scotland through the imagination of its writers and poets.

These include Robert Ferguson, Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson, to name but a few..
