Highlights include the historic 16th century Barbican area with its Elizabethan merchant houses and gardens. Visit the Hoe, where Francis Drake played bowls before defeating the invading fleet known as the Spanish Armada. It is now the location of one of the South West’s most well-known landmarks: Smeaton’s Tower.
American guests will appreciate a stop at Pilgrim Fathers’ steps, where the Mayflower set sail from in 1620. From there we head to Plymouth Sound – with its wonderful views of the dockyards and extraordinary naval history. For visitors with more time, we take can take trip out to Brunel’s 1859 Royal Albert Bridge or head up onto Dartmoor, to see glowering prisons, tors, ponies and standing stones – and maybe hear the odd ghost story.
